What is the problem my Nigeria? Why are those that lead so without vision and cannot think? A reputation that had been dented now is fast becoming irreversible What are they doing to fix the problem… nothing? Maybe we are too complacent Maybe we are weak Maybe we just do not have it in us to challenge authorities …and demand for justice and fairness. Where is our President? What has rebranding achieved? What are we doing to correct the negative views of the world against us? Can we blame them for these views? I do not think so. The very government that is supposed to protect and defend the nation The same government is milking it empty and dry A government that favours increment of 'wellbeing package' of its past presidents than the life of its citizens A government cannot account for funds and deliberately go against its own constitution A government that promises to deliver when they know that they will not It is unfortunate that these things happen I wish I have a solution ...

REP SLAPS SECURITY MAN. A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinyere Emmanuel Igwe, caused a stir yesterday at the entrance of the National Assembly as he traded blows with a security official. Igwe, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, represents Port Harcourt 2 Federal Constituency, Rivers State. He said he was embarrassed by the security operative. The security personnel, Mr. Chinelo Nwulu, said he was attempting to establish the identity of the lawmaker as he (Igwe) tried to enter the National Assembly. Witnesses said Igwe was apparently angered by the request of the security operative that he should identify himself before entering. They said Igwe gave the security operative "a dirty slap on the right side of his cheek without uttering any word." Igwe was said to have threatened to deal more blows on Nwulu, but was prevented by other security men who rushed to save their colleague from the grip of the lawmaker. He was casually dressed in black trousers and...

How Northern leaders 'swindle' the region

By Abdullahi Mohammed Governor Aliyu Babangida of Niger State has been doing everything within his power to get fellow 18 state governors in the North and other leaders from the area to change the scandalous poverty levels in our part of the country. It is the right thing to do. Otherwise, the Millennium Development Goals will be a mirage, and the seven-point agenda of President Umaru Yar'Adua. True, poverty is pervasive in the entire country. According to international development agencies, 90million out of of Nigeria's 140 million people live in abject poverty. But desperate poverty is far more pronounced in the North. Apparently in response to unflattering statistics, from international agencies and the Central bank of Nigeria, Gov Aliyu took the gauntlet to address the acute poverty in the area. He has, among others, conducted a major conference on this issue and sought far-reaching solutions to it within the shortest possible time. However, not all northern leaders are pre...
The day oil was discovered in Nigeria By Andrew Walker BBC News, Oloibiri, Nigeria Chief Sunday Inengite can understand why people have taken up arms Chief Sunday Inengite remembers the day the foreigners who had come to his village in Nigeria's Niger Delta struck oil. "They made us be happy and clap like fools, dance as if we were trained monkeys," he says. Years later, the 74-year-old now looks back on his youthful enthusiasm with sour regret. Nigeria has become Africa's biggest oil producer, but the people of Oloibiri complain they have not seen much of the money made in the 52 years of oil production. "It smacks of wickedness, hard-heartedness," he says. Inquisitive Mr Inengite was 19 years old when the foreign engineers came looking for oil in 1953. An inquisitive young man, he made friends with the British, German and Dutch engineers during the years they were exploring the area around Oloibiri, now in Bayelsa State. "I was trying to know why t...
